Emergency Contraception
If you have had unprotected sex or experienced a contraceptive failure (such as a split condom or missed pill), we offer a walk-in service for urgent oral emergency contraception.
NHS guidance states that emergency contraception is needed within 3–5 days depending on the method, and the sooner it is used, the more effective it is. Please do not wait—attend the pharmacy as soon as possible.
There are two main forms of emergency contraception available nationally: the oral emergency pill and the copper IUD (coil). Lowmoor Pharmacy supplies the oral emergency pill free of charge through the NHS. If a copper IUD may be more appropriate for you, we will provide guidance and signpost you to the relevant local service.
Ongoing Contraception
We offer a free NHS consultation to discuss your contraception needs, allowing you to start oral contraception for the first time when clinically appropriate, or to continue and monitor your existing oral contraceptive supply.
During your private consultation, a pharmacist or pharmacy technician will use shared decision-making to check clinical appropriateness and ensure the chosen method is safe and right for you.
We can also advise on broader contraceptive choices. If you are interested in methods not supplied or fitted at the pharmacy—such as implants, injections, IUDs/coils, or IUS/hormonal coils—we can signpost you to a GP or sexual health service.
What happens in a consultation?
Every contraception consultation at Lowmoor Pharmacy takes place in a private room to ensure your comfort and privacy. A trained pharmacy professional will ask you some medical questions to check if the requested contraception is clinically appropriate for you.
We discuss your medical history, any current medications, and any risk factors. This is a shared decision-making process—we will explain your options clearly so you can make an informed choice. All supplies are made via a Patient Group Direction (PGD) by competent pharmacy professionals.
Your GP will only be notified of your consultation or supply with your explicit consent. You do not even need to be registered with a GP to use this service.
- Consultations are strictly confidential and judgement-free.
- We only supply contraception if it is clinically appropriate and safe for you.
- Condoms are the only contraceptive method that also helps protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We can advise on STI testing if needed.
- If you need a pregnancy test or follow-up guidance due to missed pills or contraceptive failure, we will provide careful, clear advice.
